Statistics on seafarers

These statistics include Finnish and foreign seafarers who have served on Finnish vessels and Finnish seafarers who have served on foreign vessels, if reported. The data are updated once a year. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

DESCRIPTIONTraficom’s statistics on seafarers include Finnish and foreign seafarers who have served on Finnish vessels and Finnish seafarers who have served on foreign vessels, if reported.
DATA CONTENTFinnish and foreign seafarers who have served on Finnish vessels and Finnish seafarers who have served on foreign vessels, if reported. The statistics contains periods of service entered in the register by the beginning of March following the end of the statistical year. The statistics does not contain periods of service entered after this time as they mainly concern Finnish seafearers who have served on foreign vessels. In addition to person-years, the statistics also contains the total number of different persons in seafearers’ occupation during the year and the number of seafearers, and the number of seafearers working on vessels at two points of times – on 30 June and on 31 December.
DATA COLLECTION METHODThe basic data in the statistics of seafearers has been obtained from Traficom’s Transport Register which is based on the Act on Registration of Seafarers (1360/2006). According to the Act, the shipowner must give Traficom information about the duties and working times of seafarers to be saved in the register. For each period of service, both the profession and the period of service in days have been selected in the register.
CLASSIFICATIONS USEDPerson-years have been calculated by dividing the number of service days by 170.
UPDATING FREQUENCYAnnually.
TIME OF COMPLETION AND RELEASEThe statistics are always published in late April and early May.
TIME SERIESData has been collected since 2009.
