Summary of highway network development needs 2022–2033
This situational picture provides information about the development needs of Finland’s highway network, especially as regards safety, functionality and environmental impacts. The situational picture is primarily updated twice a year. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. The information is part of the strategic situational picture of the Finnish transport network.
Road network development needs 2021–2032
Arterial roads have the most significant deficiencies in service level on 200 kilometres of road in terms of smooth operation, safety and environmental damage. The service level of these sections of road should be elevated to meet the requirements of the decree and the needs of the current traffic volumes and transport. In addition to this, approximately 1,800 kilometres of road are in need of small measures to secure a sufficient service level.
Arterial roads need approximately 2–3 billion euros in important investments over the coming ten or so years. The development measures aimed at arterial routes, in particular, will improve the level of service and safety of trade and industry transports significantly. Class I main roads 3, 4, 9, 12, 15 and 25 and class II main roads 40 and 50 and class I main roads 2, 5, 6, 8, 13, 19 and 21 have the greatest development needs.
The funding level specified in the Transport 12 plan will cover approximately 1/4 of the most important investments in arterial routes in the period under review. Taking into account the increase in streamlining issues during the same period under review (approx. 200 km), the total number of service level deficiencies is roughly doubled compared to the current situation. This is due to the estimated growth in road traffic volumes and increased congestion by 2032.
