Vehicle stock statistics

These statistics detail the numbers of registered and commissioned road vehicles by e.g. vehicle category, power source, vehicle make and model and the region of the owner or holder. The data are updated four times a year. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

CHANGES IMPACTING THE STATISTICS

During the year 2025, changes were made to Traficom's Transport Register. These changes influenced, for example, the statistics about the average age of commissioned vehicles so that it seems to have decreased between 2024 and 2025.

Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom amended the register information of 100,000 vehicles whose inspection and tax obligations had been neglected for multiple years and removed their 'in traffic' status in the register. This affects the statistics from 2025 onwards. Due to these changes, from 2025 onwards, the data cannot fully be compared to the data from the years prior to 2025.

DESCRIPTIONThe vehicle stock statistics are based on Traficom’s Transport Register, which contains data on all road vehicles subject to registration obligation in continental Finland. The stock information is retrieved from the register quarterly. Vehicles in the Finnish Defence Forces’ own register are not included in the vehicle stock statistics.
DATA CONTENTThe numbers of registered or commissioned vehicles quarterly. Information about the vehicle category, driving power, make and model, colour and age. Information about the vehicle owner’s or holder’s area (municipality, region).
The vehicle stock includes all motor vehicles registered in the Transport Register.
Commissioned vehicles include only vehicles that have not been recorded as removed from traffic during the cross-section period.
DATA COLLECTION METHODTraficom’s Transport Register, from which vehicle stock data is retrieved quarterly.
CLASSIFICATIONS USEDDivision into regions based on municipal division; entire country, region and municipality. Vehicle categories.
UPDATING FREQUENCYFour times a year
TIME OF COMPLETION AND RELEASEThe vehicle stock statistics are compiled within fifteen working days of the end of the statistical period.
