Statistics on inspections

The statistics on inspections detail the number of periodic inspections of vehicles per year. The data are updated once a year. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

The fault information of passenger cars by model can be found in the statistics database, if there have been at least 100 inspections of the model in question during the statistical year.

The statistics on the reasons for failed inspections include the faults that have occurred at least ten times in the model in question and cases in which the share of faults leading to a fail has been at least one per cent of all inspections of the model during the statistical year.

The fault statistics for years prior to 2017 do not include the odometer readings of inspected passenger cars. The average odometer readings of different models may vary significantly. Thus, the fail rates of different models are not directly comparable.

DESCRIPTION

The statistics are based on Traficom’s Transport Register, which contains data on periodic inspection decisions, fault information and inspected vehicles. The statistical unit in the statistics on inspections is an individual inspection or a fault recorded during the inspection.

The data on the number of passed and failed inspections, the total number of inspections and the averages and medians of odometer data (rounded to the nearest 1,000 km) recorded during inspections are published for all vehicles by vehicle category, power source and age of the vehicle.

The fault information of passenger cars, the three most common reasons for a failed inspection and the averages and medians of odometer data (rounded to the nearest 1,000 km) recorded during inspections are published by model and year of entry into service, if at least 100 inspections of the model in question have been recorded during the statistical year.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The inspection statistics rules were revised during the statistical year 2023. The makes of passenger cars were revised and the statistics on them were expanded to cover the years of use 4-20. In addition, inspection data on all vehicles by power source were published starting from the statistical year 2018.

The inspection statistics rules were revised during the statistical year 2017. The makes and models in the statistics were amended and the data content of the statistics was expanded to cover the average and median kilometres driven.
