Railway network traffic

This situational picture provides information about the passenger and goods transport volumes of Finland’s railway network. The situational picture of railway network traffic is primarily updated twice a year. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. The information is part of the strategic situational picture of the Finnish transport network.

INFORMATION ON RAILWAY NETWORK TRAFFIC AND GOODS TRANSPORT VOLUMES

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency publishes information on the number of journeys and goods transports on the railway network each year. The year 2020 was exceptional in terms of passenger traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent national traffic forecasts are from 2018.

Passenger traffic in 2019 and 2020 and the forecast for 2030

In the pandemic year 2020, the number of railway journeys decreased by 45% in long-distance traffic and by 34% in local traffic compared to 2019. Long-distance journeys decreased on all sections of the track in 2020.

Goods transport in 2019 and 2020 and the forecast for 2030

Goods transport volumes on the railways in 2020 remained at the corresponding level from the previous year.

Goods transport volumes decreased on most sections of track in western and eastern Finland in 2020 and increased on some sections of track in northern Finland.
