These statistics detail the increase in the number of receivers with an HD tuner in Finnish households using different distribution networks. The data is collected four times a year. The data is based on a survey commissioned by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
In the near future, Finnish terrestrial television networks will migrate fully to DVB-T2 broadcast technology, which enables the broadcasting of high-definition (HD) programming. In cable television networks, HD broadcasts have already been available for a while.
Receiving high-definition broadcasts requires a television set or a set-top box with an HD tuner. As part of the project on the DVB-T2 transition, Traficom and the Ministry of Transport and Communications have been since 2015 conducting surveys on how prepared Finnish households are to receive HD broadcasts. The figures indicate the share of households in each distribution network that have at least one television set or set-top box capable of receiving HD broadcasts.
Definitions
Terrestrial television network, terrestrial distribution The broadcasting of television programming using the terrestrial distribution network. Some 50 per cent of Finnish households with TVs receive their TV broadcasts via the terrestrial network. Terrestrial TV is also common at holiday residences. Standard-definition (SD) programming is broadcast using DVB-T technology. DVB-T2 technology enables the broadcasting of high-definition (HD) programming.
Digital set-top box (STB), digital decoder A digital set-top box or a decoder integrated into a digital television. Terrestrial, cable and satellite networks require different set-top boxes or decoders. DVB-T2 is compatible with terrestrial television networks, DVB-C/MPEG4 with cable television networks and DVB-S2 with satellite television networks.
DVB-T2 Broadcasting technology used in the terrestrial television network to enable HD broadcasts. Slated to replace the DVB-T standard in the next few years. Television sets and set-top boxes must be equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner to transmit DVB-T2 signals.
High Definition (HD) The high resolution of HD programming results in a significantly sharper, higher-quality image than that offered by standard-quality broadcasts.
IPTV Refers to a service, offered by broadband providers, which uses the broadband network to transmit TV broadcasts.
Cable television network, cable distribution The broadcasting of television programming using the cable distribution network. Some 50 per cent of Finnish households with TVs receive their TV broadcasts via the cable network. Broadcasts in the cable television network are transmitted using DVB-C technology.
Satellite broadcasting, satellite distribution The broadcasting of television programming via the satellite network. Only a few per cent of Finnish households with TVs receive TV broadcasts via the satellite network, which is typically used in addition to terrestrial or cable television. In the satellite network, HD programming is broadcast using DVB-S2 technology.
TV audience measurement panel Finnpanel Oy measures the viewing habits of an audience panel that consists of approximately 1,000 Finnish households representing the households with a TV in Finland. The households included in the panel are selected on the basis of an establishment survey.
