These statistics include cable television subscriptions and IPTV subscriptions using fixed broadband connections offered by telecommunications operators in Finland. The data is updated twice a year. The statistics are produced by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

The increase in the number of IPTV subscriptions in 2020 is explained by technical changes that brought more existing subscriptions within the definition of IPTV

Definitions

Cable TV subscriptions indicate the number of telecommunications operators' customers with a cable television subscription. The figures include those end customers who can receive television broadcasts via a cable television subscription. However, not all of the households have a TV receiver.

IPTV subscriptions indicate the number of subscriptions that enable the reception of at least one free-to-air channel. IPTV services allow TV broadcasts to be viewed over a broadband connection. An IPTV subscription requires a sufficiently fast broadband subscription.

Households hold the majority of active cable TV and IPTV subscriptions. However, the statistics also include subscriptions acquired by businesses.

Because watching and listening to free-to-air terrestrial TV and radio broadcasts does not require a subscription, they have not been included in the statistics. Watching TV programmes with an internet browser installed on a computer or mobile device is also excluded from the statistics.
