These statistics detail the numbers and changes of ownership of watercraft. The data are updated every six months. The information is produced by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

Motorboats are by far the most represented watercraft type in the Watercraft Register. The number of jet skis has increased significantly in recent years.

The number of change of ownership of watercraft increased substantially in 2020 and 2021. Changes of ownership are indicated by the Watercraft Register data. The date of change of ownership is the date recorded in the register.

DESCRIPTIONThe statistics on watercraft stock are based on Traficom’s Transport Register, which contains information on all watercraft subject to registration obligation in continental Finland. The stock information is retrieved from the register every six months. The Finnish Defence Forces’ watercraft are not included in the statistics on watercraft stock.
DATA CONTENTRegistered watercraft quarterly. Data on watercraft types (motorboats, sailboats, etc.) by make, model and length, for example. Other data: watercraft colour, draught and engine power, and various technical specifications. Descriptive information on watercraft owners and holders.
DATA COLLECTION METHODTraficom’s Transport Register, from which cross-sectional data is retrieved quarterly.
CLASSIFICATIONS USEDDivision into regions based on municipal division; entire continental Finland, region and municipality. Length classification.
UPDATING FREQUENCYEvery six months

FURTHER INFORMATIONThe Watercraft Register was transferred from the local register offices to the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi in August 2014. The statistical period for the statistics of 2014 was between 1 August 2014 and 31 December 2014. On 1 July 2017, the registers maintained by Trafi were combined into one register, known as the Transport Register.
